Historic Properties Renovated into Modern Urban Communities

Reverie Estates seeks out historic properties in need of development in the City of Indianapolis to convert into modern apartment homes. They design the renovations with the thought of living there themselves and accentuate historic features that add character while adding amenities that provide a great living experience. Reverie Estates has a 100% Green Energy policy. The company utilizes Green Power Options, where all electricity used is purchased from environmentally friendly renewable resources, including wind, solar, geothermal or biomass generation. All new residents moving into a Reverie Estate property are required to choose the 100% Green Power Option and all common electricity utilizes the 100% option as well, making all of the Reverie Estates communities more eco-friendly.

Objective:

Bring in property wide Wi-Fi to these newly renovated properties that allow for a quick return on investment. These systems are to be a “value add” for the property and for the exclusive use of the residents to help keep the property competitive. These systems were to be designed with a secure login procedure using unique usernames and passwords including resident technical support should they need it.

Challenges:

One of the long term visions of the redevelopment of these properties were to be as “green” as possible utilizing appliances and other equipment that would use less energy was a goal in each design. These historic buildings are constructed in a very sturdy fashion with few, if any, common chases available for cabling. Running extra electrical outlets for use of powering the access points were not an option due to budgetary concerns and green goals. It was also important to implement this amenity with the idea of allowing the property management team to keep their focus on the core business of seeing to resident needs. They did not want to be diverted from their core jobs by having to offer technical assistance to residents wanting to take advantage of the wireless system.

Result:

eWireless utilized high gain antennas and managed Power Over Ethernet (POE) switches in the design of these networks. This allowed eWireless to utilize fewer wireless access points and manage power usage of the equipment to keep with the client’s green initiatives.  Additionally, with this design no extra electrical outlets needed to be installed which saved a significant amount of money. Remote management and 24/7 monitoring of the networks keep outages minimized and reduces technical support calls from residents. All technical support and resident username database is managed by eWireless team members allowing on site property management team to keep their focus in their core responsibilities.
